Sustainable Filmmaking

UCI DigiFilm is teaching the next generation of filmmakers to work creatively in an all-LED lighting environment with the goal of lowering the carbon footprint of film sets. The climate crisis impacts all levels of society and creative practices. We teach sustainable filmmaking practices and push for the rapid transition to lower carbon technology. In the LED Lighting Workshop we are switching to an all-LED film lighting package on our 1XW Lab Stage. The 1XW is where Production II students learn to work on a built film set. We use Forest Stewardship Council/Rainforest Alliance Certified wood products, and lower carbon, upcycled, and recyclable materials to construct our sets. The sets are dressed entirely with used furniture, housewares and repurposed goods.

Our LED Lighting Workshop is able to put the next-generation film lighting fixtures into the hands of students through partnership with top film lighting technology companies. Companies including KinoFlo, LiteGear, Litepanels and Mole-Richardson have generously offered loaner equipment to aid in our push for a greener, more sustainable future for filmmaking.
